Dogs of war
I was distressed to learn recently for the first time that our military considers dogs as "equipment" and that after Vietnam we left thousands of dogs behind as we abandoned that country in miserable defeat. I would hope that in this day and age that would no longer be the case. How can we justify using dogs for torture or battle but yet not give them the same protections and rights as their fellow soldiers?
My new picture on the left is of the war dog memorial. A dog named Chip saved many, many lives in war was awarded a silver star but because he was officially labeled as mere equipment the medal was taken away from him. He served with dignity and honor. For more about him and other dogs that have sacrificed their lives for our troops click the links below.

Another "pro" football player kills dog
Thanks Jennifer for bringing this!
On February 18, 2007, Atlanta Falcons' Jonathan Babineaux beat to death his live-in girlfriend's dog, Kilo, a one-year-old pit bull mix. The motive was apparent retaliation against his girlfriend, Blair Anderson, for an argument she and Babineaux had earlier that same night.
After the argument, Anderson left the house, leaving her two dogs, Kilo and Ace, with the Falcons' defensive lineman. Not long after, Babineaux phoned Anderson to inform her that something was wrong with Kilo. He advised that she should come home and check on him. Anderson returned home to find Kilo in extreme physical distress. Anderson rushed Kilo to the vet but he was dead on arrival. Autopsy results showed Kilo died from blunt force trauma to the head, leading Gwinnett County police to arrest and charge Babineaux with felony cruelty to animals. The second dog, Ace, was later removed from the Babineaux household and placed in the care of Animal Control.
In spite of the felony charge, Babineaux remains free on $2,300 bond and is still actively playing for the Falcons. To date, Babineaux has received no punishment or suspension from either the Falcons or the NFL.
Blogger William K. Wolfrum aptly sums up the glaring hypocrisy which now enshrouds the Atlanta Falcons:
Babineaux is currently in the Falcons pre-season camp, obviously keeping a low profile.
Simply put, however, as long as Babineaux is allowed to play with the Falcons while Vick is forced to sit out, the NFL's and the Falcons' treatment of Vick can only be seen as a PR ploy. It has nothing to do with ethics, or a standard of character they want from their players.
As long as Babineaux remains active, the NFL and the Falcons are little more than hypocrites whose hands were forced in the Vick case

2 more companies drop vick
I must say I'm quite disappointed in people who hit the blogs and other sites like Digg and try to defend vick. He is a loser with a thug mentality. Not once has he condemned dog fighting or claimed that he would never hurt a dog. So for those who say don't pass judgment until case is done, I ask you why has he not proudly claimed he would not hurt animals? simple answer because he would and he has and he deserves a punishment equal to what those dogs went thru. He is weak and uneducated. He is unfit for the National Football League and unfit to be called a human being.

end dog fighting, $5000 reward
The only way to end this extreme form of organized cruelty is to educate adults and children alike about the realities of this vile practice and what to do if you see evidence of it.
For the sake of our beloved pets, our families and our community, the SPCA of Texas is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any individual involved in dog fighting in the state of Texas. Help us take a stand today by reporting all suspected animal cruelty and abuse to your local law enforcement and to the SPCA of Texas at www.spca.org/cruelty or 214.742.SPCA (7722).
Dogs are brutalized every day for the gambling fix and unfathomable enjoyment of sick individuals involved in dog fighting. And society pays the price through the accompanying crimes (gambling and drugs, among others) and increased brutality that influences and is passed on to the children who are surrounded by this sub-culture. It’s a vicious cycle.
The most recent headlines of pro-football player Michael Vick’s indictment for “conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture” and animal cruelty has brought this terrifying issue to the forefront of our national consciousness again. Vick and three others face $350,000 in fines and six years in prison if convicted of the federal charges, and additional state charges of animal cruelty are still under investigation.
Here in Texas, during the 2007 legislative session, Texas lawmakers proved that they stand strongly against the inhumane crime of dog fighting by stepping up the penalties of those convicted of dog fighting. Beginning September 1, 2007, the penalty for dog fighting increases from a Class A misdemeanor to a state jail felony and the punishment for attending a dog fighting exhibition increases from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor.
Let’s take this opportunity to come together and stamp out animal cruelty and abuse of all types. For more information or to help the SPCA of Texas in its mission to provide every animal exceptional care and a loving home, please visit www.spca.org or contact us at 214.742.SPCA (7722).
If you’d like to help the SPCA’s Rescue and Investigations Department do more to serve the animals of Texas, you can sponsor an investigator by donating online or by calling 214.742.SPCA (7722).

108 People in 36 states live chained to doghouses over the July 4th Holiday to seek freedom for America's neglected canines and to educate about the dangers of chaining a dog
12 days later, chained rottweiler kills Atlanta 5-year-old girl near
the site where 15 people had recently stood against the practice
Tipton, PA — July 16, 2007 — Dogs Deserve Better, a national nonprofit working to end the suffering endured by dogs kept chained or penned for life, announced today that at least 108 people in 36 states and Canada lived chained to doghouses as part of the organization’s Chain Off 2007 event, entitled “Unchain the 50.” The event was the groups most successful ever, garnering news, tv, and blog attention nationwide and across the world.
The campaign, criticized as 'not important, foolish' by some website commentors, turned deadly serious only 12 days later, when 5-year-old Tiffany Pauley lost her life to a chained rottweiler in Atlanta, site of the largest Chain Off. 15 people lived chained to doghouses in Atlanta's Piedmont Park for up to 30 hours June 30-July 1 in order to bring awareness to the plight of chained dogs, and educate about the resulting damage they can do to children.
Tiffany, a child with Down's Syndrome, had wandered off from her home earlier that morning. She was found hours later lying dead under a tree near the rottweiler. Three chained dogs were removed from the home, and two penned dogs remain on the property.
Tammy Grimes, founder of the organization, expressed the group's frustration with America's failure to understand the nature of a dog. "Not only are we chaining ourselves to doghouses to advocate for the dogs, but to advocate for innocent children such as Tiffany who may wonder into their path. As I read the articles about Tiffany, I was enveloped with a staggering sadness at a loss which could be so easily preventable, if only America would understand the dangers in chaining a large breed dog; if only Americans were forced to take responsibility for their 'family pets'.
These dogs, unsocialized, unneutered, unhappy, become the equivalent of a loaded weapon in a neighborhood backyard. I am most disturbed by the following quote from an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article following Tiffany's death: 'Turner’s mother, Patricia Cook, said her son always kept the dogs chained and cared for them. “Nothing wrong happened here,” Cook said.'
Nothing wrong happened here? A child just lost her life; I am totally floored that anyone would say "Nothing wrong happened here"...that Ms. Cook has no idea of the irresponsibility inherent in leaving a rottweiler, a shepherd, and a pit mix chained in the backyard, where any child can easily gain access to them. Lawmakers MUST wake up to the dangers inherent in chaining a dog, as it becomes more and more apparent that people who chain their dogs will not.
Yards must be fenced for both the protection of the dog and the protection of our nation's youth. When we mistreat our animals, the human race pays the price in the end. Chaining of dogs, regardless of breed, is an archaic and dangerous practice that must end! We, along with our growing list of supporters and allies, will not stop until it does.
Our 'Unchain the 50' Campaign was an unqualified success. We should be celebrating, yet Tiffany's death brings us back to reality, back to realizing that our work is not done. I want to thank all of you who stood with us across our great nation. Continue to stand, so that Tiffany's death is not in vain. So that one day America has a better understanding of a dog's needs, and our neighborhoods once again become safer places for both dogs and children."
Last year, California became the first state in the country to pass a statewide law specifically limiting the amount of time a dog may be tethered to a stationary object. In June Texas passed a bill setting tighter restrictions on chaining. Anti-tethering bills are still alive in in North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Over 100 local governments across the United States have passed legislation in recent years that either bans or limits how long a dog may be chained, recognizing that existing animal welfare laws are outdated and that dogs are intelligent, social, active animals that suffer greatly if kept chained or penned for their lives.

Join the call for Nike to drop Vick
Subject: Press release - The HSUS Calls on Nike to Drop Michael Vick Based on Dogfighting Evidence
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Humane Society of the United States Calls on Nike to Drop Michael Vick Based on Dogfighting Evidence
June 19, 2007 – The Humane Society of the United States is calling on Nike, Inc. to terminate its commercial association with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. In a letter sent yesterday to the company’s Beaverton, Ore. headquarters, Wayne Pacelle, HSUS president and CEO called on Mark Parker, Nike president and CEO, to drop the NFL star as a corporate spokesperson as soon as is contractually feasible because of Vick’s possible association with an alleged dogfighting operation on property he owned in Virginia. Nike is the world’s largest supplier of sportswear.
In the letter, Pacelle writes that The HSUS “…knows that Nike has high standards for its spokespersons, and urges Nike to terminate its relationship with Vick as soon as is feasible…we trust Nike does not want to be associated with any celebrity who is linked to this odious form of animal cruelty.”
Dogfighting is an epidemic in the nation, and The HSUS does not want to see young people drawn into this criminal activity because prominent athletes and other celebrities glorify or romanticize the practice. Even though dogfighting is a felony in 48 states, and also a federal felony, the practice occurs in every state and has been surging in urban communities in the last decade.
Since the story first broke back on April 26th, evidence has been revealed in the media describing typical signs of dogfighting allegedly taking place at Vick’s former property in Surry County, Va.
Air Tran Airways decided not to renew its contract with Mr. Vick earlier this month, and did so without any specific prompting from The HSUS.
The HSUS has called on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to take swift action against Vick if any criminal charges are filed against him, in keeping with the new disciplinary policy the league instituted.

Time for Mike Vick to be a man
The Virginia Animal Fighting Task Force (VAFTF) responded to assist Virginia State Police and Drug Task Force officers upon the execution of a search warrant on April 25, 2007 at the Smithfield, Virginia property of Michael Vick. Evidence seized included:
• a number of injured American Pit Bull Terrier dogs
• animal fighting paraphernalia
• animal training and breeding equipment including a "rape stand"
Again for more on the report about the sick details of what police discovered visit the Pet-abuse.com site.
He can't hide from the truth forever. "50 abused dogs" is what investigators found. He knew what was going on and let it happen. Let's hope the companies he has endorsement deals with wake up and help him take the responsibility that ultimately resides with him.

How to stop another Virginia Tech, step one...
Alto, Texas — After a 13-year-old Alto boy reportedly admitted to the January 4 fatal shooting of a cat on the animal’s family’s property and an ensuing investigation turned up further evidence of a crime, PETA wrote to Cherokee County Attorney Craig Caldwell urging him to file felony cruelty-to-animals charges against the boy in accordance with the Texas Penal Code. In his reply, Caldwell stated that because the suspect is a juvenile, Caldwell could not release records and files on the case—despite the fact that PETA was only requesting that he say whether or not charges will be filed.
Now, more than three months after Tetsu, a 1-year-old cat, was found dead in the yard by his guardian—who reportedly also saw the boy brandishing a shotgun nearby—no charges have been filed, and Caldwell isn’t talking. PETA has posted an action alert on its heavily trafficked Web site urging visitors to contact Caldwell and demand that he charge the suspect to the fullest extent of the law.
PETA points out that such heinous crimes against animals are a red flag—especially when committed by juveniles. FBI interviews with murderers showed that 36 percent had tortured and killed animals as children and that 46 percent had done so as adolescents. Serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer, Albert DeSalvo ("The Boston Strangler"), David Berkowitz ("Son of Sam"), and Lee Boyd Malvo all had histories of killing animals. In recent years, many schools have suffered the tragic consequences of ignoring or casually dismissing such crimes when children opened fire on schoolmates and other people.
"Mr. Caldwell’s job is to uphold and enforce the laws, and he’s refusing even to state whether or not charges will be brought against Tetsu’s allegedly confessed killer," says PETA Director Daphna Nachminovitch. "Repeat offenders are the rule—not the exception—among animal abusers. Failing to act now may only encourage further abuses and killings."

(courtesy of AOL/AP)
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A Callaway County animal research lab has agreed to pay a $33,000 civil penalty after investigators alleged the company committed nearly 40 violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture filed the complaint against Sinclair Research Center in October 2006, more than three years after animal rights activists targeted the lab in an undercover sting.
Among the violations found by Agriculture Department inspectors: failing to provide animals with appropriate pain relief during surgery; inadequate training of employees for animal handling and care; failure to vaccinate research dogs and cats; and keeping animals in cages smaller than the legal limits.
``The gravity of the violations alleged in this complaint is great,'' the report concluded.
The Agriculture Department also accused Sinclair Research of a ``lack of good faith'' for conducting research at a location not known to the federal agency.
This "research lab" is still in business despite their horrendous record. They continue to sell live animals for useless research. Its time to put an end to this cruel behavior.

Gas prices?
I reside in South Texas, home to a refinery and we have always had inexpensive gas. Today its $2.49 for reg unleaded. I'm sure in other parts of the country its higher. I'm well aware that my 2nd favorite state, California, has the highest prices (no doubt punishment for their anti-republican views). Anyway, no one seems to notice this problem. No one, other than a few people who post on Digg, del.icio.us, and a couple blogs are really talking about a conflict with Iran. Ok a few political news shows mention it too, but the general public does not seem to care. Or maybe they just have not noticed yet. Am I wrong? Are people talking about it and I'm just not hearing it? How can we not be outraged at this rise in gas prices? Is there any less demand today than yesterday or a month ago when we paid closer to $2 rather than $3. It just seems strange to me that there does not appear to be much outrage out in the public over these rising prices. Maybe we are all too distracted by the potential for conflict and the current military situation in Iraq.

March to war part 2
Today the news cautious. British Prime Minister Tony Blair warned Iran of a "different phase" of action should they continue to hold these men. And Russian news agencies are reporting that the Russian gov't is pulling out key personnel from Iran. Also, as with all of this, rumors are about that the Russian "intelligence" has witnessed massive US troop build-up along the Iranian border. Of course the US just happens to be conducting war games in the Persian Gulf, just as we did in March 2003 before we invaded Iraq.
So what does it all mean? Who knows but it is a problem because all this speculation is causing the price of gas to rise and rise quickly. Any little excuse or activity can cause this to happen. Today futures prices shot up $5 but the cost of oil per barrel closed only up $1.59 US dollars. But even then that is significant. So be aware, not afraid, but aware of these conditions and be prepared to pay more for gas until these matters are resolved.
Bi-partisan thank you
The fight is not over. Now the US Senate has to vote. So again I encourage you all to contact your US Senators and ask them to SUPPORT this bill. Thanks.

Oh what a day
Come on Texas!
This is from the US Humane Society:
Each year almost 100,000 horses are slaughtered in the United States for diners in Europe and Japan. These riding, race, and carriage horses are in good condition but are bought at auction by killer buyers and transported from all over the country to Texas and Illinois for slaughter. Many were stolen and sent to auction so their former owners are often totally unaware of the pain, fear and suffering their horses endure before being slaughtered.
TV for your phone, on demand
NEW YORK, March 14 (Reuters) - NBC Universal said on Wednesday it will sell prime-time television shows like "The Office" and "Heroes" on demand over cell phone networks in the United States.
Viewers will be able to purchase full episodes of top-rated NBC shows starting at $1.99 for a 24-hour period. NBC said it is working with MobiTV to provide the service, part of a mobile television network first created in 2003.
