Fox guards the hen house

Ever heard this old country expression? Well its what our government allows to happen everyday. People often wonder why environmentalists are so outspoken about protecting the environment. Pushing government to do more, yet for the most part Republicans refuse to allow the government to get involved and provide oversight. They use phrases like "too much regulation" and "government interference with business." But according to published reports we now know the FDA knew there were problems with the peanut butter and spinach facilities. They knew about it for "years." But they could do nothing about it because there are "too many food processors and imports." Are you kidding me? The biggest and best country in the world and we cannot protect our citizens because we won't allocate enough funds to hire inspectors to protect our food supply? This is outrageous! How can we sit by and allow this to happen? I mention the environmentalist in the beginning because the same situation occurs with the big pollution companies in our country. The govt tends to look the other way and state that the companies will watch themselves, thus you have the fox watching the hen house. And now with this report out that we tried that with these food companies and it failed, its time to take action and force the govt to look right at these problems and fix them. The USDA was willing to go out of its way to help foreign companies that slaughter horses to get the funding needed for this heinous and inhumane practice to continue, but for American citizens there is no govt agency going out of its way to ensure food safety and protections.
